Cardboard Recycling for Businesses
Today more than ever in the past, cardboard and paper make up the majority of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).
Fueled by online shopping and packaging, cardboard and other paper products make up as much as 27 percent of Americans’ MSW, according to the U.S. EPA. And that number could increase, according to comScore online retail commerce in the United States in 2017 increased 18 percent over the previous year.
To keep paper products out of the landfill and reuse valuable recyclables, Millennium Waste Incorporated encourages businesses to take advantage of a simple, cost-saving, cardboard recycling program.
Recycling cardboard is simple with Millennium Waste. We offer separate receptacles for commercial cardboard to make recycling convenient and we will work with businesses to develop the right recycling program to meet your business needs.
To make recycling cardboard more efficient:
- Have a system in place to collect recyclable cardboard before it becomes trash
- Break boxes down flat to conserve space in recycling containers
- Be sure to remove all strapping, polystyrene, plastic, and other contaminants before recycling and if you generate large quantities consider baling your cardboard
- Secure a clean, dry place to collect cardboard because wet cardboard is often rejected at a recycling facility
Recycling cardboard saves valuable resources. Recycle Across America estimates recycling only 1 ton of cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil and recycling cardboard takes only 75 percent of the energy needed to make new cardboard.
The good news is that old corrugated cardboard (OCC) is recycled at high rates. About 80 percent of retailers and grocers recycle cardboard and overall corrugated cardboard has the best recycling rate of any packaging material currently used.
Millennium is strong supporter of recycling in the Quad Cities and encourages participation in the convenient and efficient recycling services that are available for Millennium’s customers. Millennium offers collections options for a wide variety of recyclables including cardboard.
As the leading commercial waste management company in the Quad Cities area, it’s Millennium’s goal to help commercial customers become more eco-friendly and efficient with their waste.
